Large Ashanti Comb

Size: 32" x 20".

This artefact is carved by Ashanti craftsmen in Ghana, West Africa. These combs originate from one of Africa's oldest tribes, the Ashanti, who live in present day Ghana.

While used only for decorative purposes, the ornamentation may often reveal information about the owner. By looking at the carved figure on the comb it may be possible to identify specific tribes and the comb may thus be a means of tribal identification.
In some cases the type of decoration may even give information on the owner's social standing.
